Crazy Dancing Guy Number 3

Written by Webovator in Tribes

My friend John Serra from the 30DC Friendfeed group posted a link to this, saying, if you are worried about being a market leader, try being guy #3 – hilarious, but to the point – Seth’s Blog: Guy #3. Seth Godin, who wrote Tribes, had this to say about the video:

My favorite part happens just before the first minute mark. That’s when guy #3 joins the group. Before him, it was just a crazy dancing guy and then maybe one other crazy guy. But it’s guy #3 who made it a movement.

Initiators are rare indeed, but it’s scary to be the leader. Guy #3 is rare too, but it’s a lot less scary and just as important. Guy #49 is irrelevant. No bravery points for being part of the mob.

We need more guy #3s.

  • You are right. It's an amazing video. But I'm see this clip a little different than most people. In my view guy #2 just joined the dance to make fun of guy #1. He imitates his movements so exactly as if to make fun of them. Surely people were already wondering who this crazy guy #1 was. Otherwise they wouldn't have started filming him. With guy #3 it really is different. Here the line between goofing around, making fun of the other ones and joining this tribe blur. And that's where the fun begins!

Actually, I did also think Guy #2 was mocking Guy #1. But what I just cannot figure out is how guy #3 got ALL THOSE PEOPLE TO JUST RUSH OVER AND DANCE. I mean, he doesn't seem like a typical trend setter. I wonder if a lot of them joined in just to make fun of #3. Or maybe they just all thought, if THAT guy is doing it without fear of anyone laughing at him, then what the heck am I afraid of? It is just radical. I have seen similar situations, at concerts, drum circles, parties, and clubs, where there are only like 2 people dancing. But never have I seen it go from 2 people to 200 people in the course of 3 minutes.
